This 9kg capacity freestanding washing machine offers 13 wash programs to choose from, including options for cottons and mixed fabrics, as well as a speedy 14-minute wash for smaller loads and an eco setting. 

You can download extra programs via LG’s smartphone app, ThinQ, which also allows you to remote start your appliance and troubleshoot any issues you might have. LG claims that the ‘AI wash’ on this machine uses sensors to analyse the weight and fabric type of your laundry, optimising the washing motion to help your clothes last for longer.

Hisense WFQY9014EVJM

The allergy program on the Hisense WFQY9014EVJM washing machine could help anyone with sensitive skin as it uses a blast of steam that’s designed to remove troublesome irritants and leave clothes hygienically clean.

The selection of 15 programs includes a 20°C low-temperature wash to save energy, and a 15-minute quick wash to save time. The ‘pause and add’ function lets you stop the program part-way through if you need to add something else to the wash, such as a stray sock.

Hotpoint NSWM 946 BS UK

We like: It's energy efficient

We don't like: The programs are slow

This is a freestanding black washing machine with a 9kg drum capacity for cottons and half this for synthetics, making it suitable for a medium or large household.

You’ll find the usual selection of programs around the dial, with options for mixed loads, duvets and woollens, among others. If you’re in a hurry, there's a program that can wash a full load in 45 minutes or a smaller load in half an hour. There’s also a rapid option that speeds up the standard programs, and a button to activate the steam hygiene setting if you want to use this to remove bacteria or dust mites.

John Lewis JLWM5845

We like: The powerful spin cycle

We don't like: We spotted a few usability niggles

This freestanding washing machine by John Lewis can hold up to 8kg of laundry and has a maximum spin speed of 1,400rpm. As well as the usual cottons and synthetics programs, there are dedicated settings for denim, outdoor items, sportswear and silk. There's a pre-wash setting for heavily soiled items, too.

Note that the control panel is poorly laid out and watch out for some sharp edges on the opening to the detergent drawer.

Bosch WGG24400GB

We like: Energy efficient and easy to use

We don't like: Slow wash programs

This freestanding washing machine has a 9kg cottons capacity, 1,400rpm maximum spin and an A rating for energy – and there's a large range of wash programs to choose from. You can also delay the start of your washing to suit your schedule. There's a child lock, too.

However, it's quite a noisy machine, especially during the spin cycle, so it may not be the best choice if you have an open-plan kitchen.

Hoover HBWOS 69TAME

We like: It has good rinse and spin cycles

We don't like: The illogically ordered control panel

This 9kg integrated washing machine is a good capacity for a medium-sized household with limited kitchen space. Its programs include soft care, 60°C allergy care and rapid care options that claim to take as little as 14 minutes to wash 2kg.

It’s also a smart washing machine, so you can manage your appliance remotely, run diagnostic checks and scan labels courtesy of the Hoover Wizard app.

Samsung WW11DG5B25AEEU

We like: Doesn't use much water

We don't like: Program times can be slow

This machine features Samsung’s SpaceMax design, meaning it can hold 11kg of cottons, without taking up any more floorspace than a standard washing machine. It can be linked to your smartphone, Alexa or Google Assistant and controlled remotely.

The AI EcoBubble feature pre-mixes water and detergent to create a foam; Samsung says this removes stains at lower temperatures, saving energy and reducing fabric damage.

We like: Its excellent spin and low water use

We don't like: Some usability issues

This freestanding washing machine from LG can hold up to 10kg of cottons and has a spin speed of up to 1,400rpm. Its spin cycle was certainly impressive, removing large amounts of water from our test loads – it could save you money as your clothes will need less time in the tumble dryer.

It also comes with a five-year guarantee, which is far more generous than we've seen from other washing machine manufacturers.

Washing machine deals from £600 to £800

Fisher & Paykel WH1060S1

We like: Quieter than most

We don't like: Higher running costs than average

You don't see many Fisher & Paykel washing machines, but on paper the WH1060S1 is fantastic. It has a large 10kg capacity and an ‘Add garment’ button so you can pause the wash and add in anything you forgot.

It also has automatic detergent dispensing, so you simply fill a large tank with liquid detergent, and the machine will dispense the right amount according to how heavy the load is and the program you've selected.

Hisense WF7S1247BB

We like: It's energy efficient and doesn't use much water

We don't like: The depth means it’ll stick out from under your worktop

This large-capacity black washing machine has many features, including an AI Super Wash program that automatically detects the weight and type of fabric before choosing the best program to clean everything. 

You won't even need to add detergent or softener, as the correct amount is dispensed automatically – you just top up the reservoirs every few weeks.

One thing to note is that it’s 67.5cm deep, so if you’re placing it under a standard 60cm worktop it’ll poke out more than most.

How to spot a good deal on a washing machine

Rebecca Jakeman, Which? washing machines expert says: More often than not, paying more for a washing machine doesn't guarantee you exceptional cleaning performance. In fact, models with higher price tags tend to offer extra features instead, such as 'smart' capabilities and more washing programs – so there's no need to pay above the odds if you don't want to.

Where is the best place to buy a washing machine?

To find the best shops for home appliances, tech and more, we conducted an online survey of 3,527 members of the Connect panel and the general public in July 2024.

We asked how satisfied people were with the retailer and generated ratings for customer service, value for money, delivery and more for major retailers including AO, Currys and John Lewis & Partners.

How much do you need to pay for a washing machine?

Some washing machines cost less than £300, while others stretch well over the £1,000 mark.

Which? testing shows you’re more likely to end up with a Don’t Buy than a Best Buy if you spend less than £300.

You usually have to pay more than £500 to get a Best Buy. With this budget you can choose between a variety of Best Buys, ranging from big to small, freestanding and integrated.

There are hidden gems to be found, however – check out the best cheap washing machines under £400. 

It's always a good idea to check our washing machine reviews before buying – the most expensive Don’t Buy we’ve found in our tests is nearly £580. That's an expensive mistake to make!

What extra washing machine costs should you consider?

1. Installation and delivery costs

Some retailers charge significantly more than others for delivery.

Some give you no choice over the date or time of the delivery (so you'll need to make sure you're at home that day).

AO charges the most we've seen for a quick delivery and a time slot of your choice – either morning (7am-12pm), lunch (10am-2pm) or afternoon (12-5pm). 

2. Disposal and recycling costs

Disposal costs start from around £20 from each retailer.

AO charges £30 to disconnect your old appliance, but most other retailers include this service in the installation cost of your new machine.

So AO's charge could add £30 to the total cost of your new freestanding appliance. But your total costs could potentially still be less than elsewhere, depending on what combination of services you need.  

Overall, it pays to be flexible about timings if you can. If you're not able to collect, install or disconnect your washing machine, there's not much you can do other than pay the additional fees, so keep that in mind and factor it in to your total budget.
