Putting a budget together before you begin your kitchen renovation will help you to choose the best quality kitchen and avoid unexpected surprises.
Remember, you should always factor in 10-20% of your total budget for contingency costs in case any issues arise.
To find out how much a kitchen costs in 2025, we consulted the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS), which provided us with typical costs for standard and bespoke kitchens, as well as a breakdown of costs for kitchen islands, worktops and installation.

Kitchen costs breakdown
Although the total cost of your kitchen renovation can vary significantly, the proportion of your budget that you spend on each part of the renovation will be fairly similar.
Magnet Kitchens told us: 'Expect to spend around 35% for cabinets, 20% for labour and 15% for appliances. The remainder will go on plumbing, flooring, electrics and other expenses.
'On average, a kitchen renovation should only cost 5-10% of the value of your home.'

How much does it cost to replace kitchen cabinet doors?
If you’re happy with your kitchen layout and looking for ways to cut costs on a new kitchen, then replacing or repairing your cabinet doors can be a great choice.
Kitchen cabinets come in standard sizes (usually 500mm or 600mm wide), so you can install any brand of door on to any brand of cabinet – just make sure you check the measurements before you buy.

- Best built-in ovens Prices of built-in ovens can vary massively, but several Best Buys cost less than £300.
- Best hobs Hobs range in price from £99 to a staggering £2,000-plus. A number of Best Buy hobs cost less than £300.
- Best fridge freezers Which? Best Buy fridge freezers start from £400.
- Best dishwasher Prices of dishwashers can reach £1,500, but there are Best Buys for less than £400.
- Best washing machines If you chose carefully, you can spend less than £400 for a Best Buy.
- Best kettle and toaster sets Kettles can cost up to £290, but some of our Best Buy models start from a much more reasonable £23, and Best toasters Best Buy toasters start from £26.

BCIS research and Which? kitchens assessment
The Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) database analyses price data from a variety of sources.
Materials costs are based on the best trade prices from a range of suppliers across the UK, which are then benchmarked to reveal the best national average.
Labour rates are based on the current Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council wage agreement.
All of this data is put into a standardised model of the average kitchen. The prices include everything to carry out a kitchen renovation job, including labour, materials, any preliminary work, contractor overheads and profit, and VAT. Prices are correct as of November 2024.
Our research is based on our consumer surveys and expert lab assessments.
In January and February 2023, we asked 4,378 Which? members who renovated their kitchen in the past 10 years to share their buying experience and opinions of their kitchen.
We also assessed kitchen units from the big-name kitchen companies, including Ikea, Howdens and Magnet, looking at a base unit, wall cupboard and a drawer unit for each kitchen.
We average companies’ scores to find the best kitchen brands.
