The best cleaning sprays will leave your bathroom and kitchen surfaces clean and sparkling, while the worst have little impact on household grime.
Bathroom cleaners are designed to remove soap scum and stubborn limescale, and kitchen cleaners are supposed to cut through tough grease and grime. All-purpose cleaners, as the name suggests, can tackle multiple cleaning tasks, helping you go from room to room with just one spray.
We've tested leading brands including Cif, Dettol, Domestos, Ecover, Flash, Mr Muscle and Viakal. With all these sprays, we'd recommend always testing on an inconspicuous area first.
Our reviews are split between bathroom cleaning sprays, kitchen cleaning sprays and all-purpose cleaning sprays, with Best Buy recommendations and Don't Buys to avoid in each category.
How our tests find you the best
Bathroom grime removal
Most sprays will easily clean a bath or shower straight after it's been used. To find the best we leave dirty soap grime to dry for 24 hours before testing them.
Baked-on kitchen stains
Cooking spills from bubbling pots are a pain to get rid of. We use baked-on curry and rice water left to dry for a day in our tests to find the best kitchen sprays.
All purpose cleaning
The true all-rounders of the cleaning world need to deal with grease in the kitchen and soap scum in the bathroom. We make sure we test them for both.
We also test...
We check if the ingredients contain any chemicals that could harm aquatic life. Plus whether refills are available and if the packaging can be recycled.

How we test cleaning sprays
The tests for the three types of cleaning spray differ based on the types of grime and the surfaces they’re tested against. All-purpose spray tests are a combination of bathroom and kitchen spray tests.
Bathroom sprays

Dirt and soap grime are left to dry on ceramic tiles for 24 hours, then cleaning spray is applied. We assess how well the cleaning product breaks down the grime, plus how clean the surface is before and after an automated scrubbing machine performs a set number of cleaning strokes. We repeat this test four times and record the average rating.
For the limescale test, we assess the product's ability to dissolve a Carrara marble slab by immersing it in the bathroom cleaner (limescale is mainly calcium carbonate, which is also present in marble). This test is run twice.
To simulate a vertical surface such as a bathroom wall, the slab is placed in a vertical stand to allow the product to run off. We also assess how well the sprays handle limescale on a flat surface, such as the floor of a shower. In both instances, the bathroom cleaner is applied, rinsed off and the slab dried before assessing the descaling. We repeat this test five times.
Kitchen sprays

We test each spray against a range of tough cooking stains, including baked-on grease, starchy spills such as rice water and stubborn stains such as curry sauce, which can discolour surfaces. Each one is applied to the tiles and left for 24 hours.
We then apply the cleaning spray and use an automated scrubbing machine to mimic the cleaning process. After a set number of cleaning strokes, we assess how well the tile has been cleaned. We repeat this test four times for each stain type and record the average rating.
All-purpose sprays
For kitchen stains, our lab applies grease-based mess to tiles, and cleaning spray is applied to a cloth. We use an automated scrubbing machine to mimic the cleaning process and assess how well the tile is cleaned after a set number of strokes. We repeat this four times and record the average rating.
For bathroom grime, our lab applies soap scum and dirt to ceramic tiles, which are left to dry for 24 hours. The cleaning spray is applied to the tile, and we assess how well the cleaning product breaks down the grime and how clean the surface is before and after scrubbing using an automated scrubbing machine. We repeat this four times and record the average rating.
We clean reflective tiles using the cleaning spray and a cloth. After scrubbing using an automated scrubbing machine, a panel of experts assesses the surfaces for droplets and streaks.
What is its environmental impact?
We look into the ingredients used and what their environmental impact is, including whether they are biodegradable, harmful to aquatic life or persistent (likely to accumulate and linger in waterways). We also consider how transparent manufacturers are about the ingredients they use.
We also take into account how easy the packaging is to recycle and how much information about recyclability is given on the packaging. We check whether the packaging itself is made from recycled materials and/or whether it's refillable, as well as packaging utilisation (whether the packaging is under-filled, and therefore wasteful).

Don't Buy cleaning sprays
Our tests uncover the best and the worst. If a cleaning spray performs so poorly that we think you should avoid it, we call it a Don't Buy. We've tested four cleaning sprays that we've named Don't Buys.
Don't Buy cleaning sprays just can't do their main job well enough. This means that if you rely on them, your kitchen and bathroom won't be left spotless.
Kitchen surfaces might appear smeared or greasy, and you're still likely to see limescale in the bathroom if you use a Don't Buy.

The best cleaning sprays that cost less than £1

We've tested 24 popular kitchen, bathroom and all-purpose cleaning sprays from big brands and major supermarkets, and two supermarket own labels emerged as Great Value options while also being Best Buys. Which? Great Value cleaning sprays have to meet minimum performance standards, as well as being among the cheapest products per 100ml, so you know you're bagging a real bargain.
Costing as little as 11p per 100ml while still achieving impressive test scores, our Great Value cleaning sprays cost considerably less than big brand Best Buy equivalents.
At just 85p, two Great Value and Best Buy kitchen cleaning sprays cost less than a third of the price of a big-name competitor that was nowhere near as impressive in our tests.
