We like: It's easy to turn over on this mattress
We don't like: You might find it a bit bouncy
With prices typically starting at £250 for a double, it's hard to find a better value mattress. Confusingly it is listed as the Sleepsoul and Birlea Sleepsoul for different prices in some retailers, so it's worth looking at both if you want to track down the cheapest price when you buy.
It arrives rolled up in a box and only weighs 24kg, so it's easy to carry to the room of your choice. You can use its four handles to lift and rotate it to even out wear and tear.
Under the non-removable cover there is a generous 21cm pocket sprung core and multiple layers of comfortable foam, which give it a soft tension. The layers include a cool gel foam which produces a 'cold' insulation level - helpful if you tend to overheat in the night.
Find out how well it encourages correct spinal alignment with our full Sleepsoul Heaven review.

We like: It's not too hot and not too cold
We don't like: It gives off a bit of an odour at first
Although mattress technology has changed in recent years, there are still some older mattresses around that provide good sleep and good value. The Simba Cool is one of them.
It has a fairly simple structure, with a 2cm layer of comfort foam sitting on top of a 12cm layer of denser base foam. It's a good choice if you prefer a mattress with a firmer tension.
Read our full Simba Cool Foam review to see if it will give you a good night's sleep.
You can find it for £239 exclusively at Argos.
We like: The removable machine-washable cover
We don't like: It's a bit bouncy and hard to rotate, no sleep trial
If you're after a basic foam mattress, this Silentnight could be a good option: it has a 17cm foam core, with a token 2.4cm layer of memory foam on top.
Silentnight says it will gently hug you, and we agree – the memory effect isn't too strong so you won't be sucked into the mattress.
It's been around for a while, and it's not the cheapest price we've ever seen it at, but it's still a pretty good deal.
Read our full Silentnight Now 7 Zone memory foam review to see if it will give you a good night's sleep.
We like: The 60-night sleep trial, it's not too bouncy
We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing
Not quite sure if you want a foam mattress or a pocket sprung? Silentnight's Just Bliss double mattress combines a large pocket sprung core with layers of gel-infused foam, which should provide you with support and a bit of pressure relief for an aching back.
Our independent tests rate this mattress as medium firmness, with a 5.4 score on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft). It feels cold to lie on, so it's a good choice if you tend to sweat at night.
But will it give you all-around body support and last as long as you'd expect?

We like: It feels cold to lie on, it's not too bouncy
We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing, no sleep trial
This isn't the cheapest price we've seen the Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid mattress on sale, but it's still a good deal.
The term ‘hybrid’ is slightly confusing here. Hybrid mattresses are usually a mix of pocket springs and foam layers, but there is no foam in this mattress. This forms part of Jay-Be’s eco claims. Instead, it's made from pocket springs and layers of polyester: an 18.5cm pocket spring core, with a 2.5cm mini pocket spring core on top and several layers of polyester webbing.
But will the lack of foam mean it's less supportive?
Read our full Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid E-Pocket Eco Truecore review to find out.
We like: 100-night sleep trial included, 10-year warranty, won't trap heat around you
We don't like: The cover is removable but it can't be washed
The name Nettle conjures up images of weeds stinging your shins rather than softness, but Jay-Be claims the nettles and other plant-based fibres such as cotton used in this mattress provide natural comfort and exceptional breathability.
The large 17.5cm pocket spring core and 3cm mini pocket spring means we class this double mattress as pocket sprung, rather than hybrid – despite the fibrous layers between the springs.
When it comes to firmness, our independent tests rated it as 6.5, on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

We like: 200-night sleep trial included, 10-year warranty
We don't like: Feels a bit bouncy
Introduced in 2023, the Simba Hybrid is an update to the Simba Original Hybrid. It's made in the UK and is delivered rolled up in a box. If after 200 nights, you decide it's not for you, you can return it for free.
The mattress is composed of a 2.5cm layer of recycled foam, covered by 16cm pocket spring core, then 2cm standard polyurethane foam. There is another 2.5cm mini pocket spring core on top, along with 2cm of Simbatex high-resistance polyurethane foam.
When it comes to firmness, our independent tests rated it as 6, on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).
Read our review of the Simba Hybrid mattress to see how it performed in our tests.
The mattress is currently on sale at Land of Beds for £639.

Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:
'Don't panic about buying a mattress purely because it's on sale, because there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price.
'We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent model for a fraction of the price of some.'

Whether you're after a new double mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your favourite brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain.
Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs.
Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.
You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. And, although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering.
So we'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. But while it scored well in our lab tests overall, we are not currently recommending any Emma mattresses as Best Buys, as the brand is being taken to court by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator due to its online sales practices.

Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. Eve offers a 200-night sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge within 40 days.
Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial nights offer might not apply.
As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off, and up to 50%. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain models, or if you spend above a particular amount, or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.

You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 12 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £361.
Not sure which one to go for? Head to the top five most popular Ikea mattresses to choose from there.

Simba is another brand that's no stranger to a deal, and one that's also been at the centre of a (now resolved) CMA sales tactics investigation. Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door; the company offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey.
We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though, as there can be conditions attached – such as a minimum spend or a discount that only applies to a particular mattress.

Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – allow you the time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period.
This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.
A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you have back pain, for example, it could take quite a while to get used to a new mattress.
Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached.
If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll be able to keep it for, if you need to use a mattress protector and what you need to do to return it if it's not right for you.
Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether they're offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.
Read more about mattress sleep trials and find out which brand offers the longest.
Retailers also offer their own deals throughout the year. We've listed some retailers below to get you started. Check T&Cs for deals before you buy.
To find the best shops to buy a mattress, we surveyed 1,800 Which? Connect panel members in October 2023. We asked how satisfied people were with their shopping experience from mattress retailers, both in-store and online.
Our latest survey rates mattress shops including Emma, Eve, Ikea and John Lewis on the quality and range of their products, as well as on advice and delivery. It also reveals that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought their mattress in-store, while 53% shopped online.
